Winfred Basnight Jr. attended Chowan College from 1980-1982. Basnight was a standout basketball player while at Chowan. During his two years, he amassed 805 points. In 1980-1981, he averaged 14.4 points a game and was the team’s third leading rebounder. In 1981-1982, during his sophomore year, he averaged 12.2 points a game in.  Basnight was a two-time winner of the Coaches Award and was also named All-Eastern Tarheel Conference. For his excellent play in the Region X tournament, Basnight was selected for the All-Tournament Team.
Basnight, a Business Administration major, excelled in the classroom as well having been selected for Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities.
Basnight went on to continue his basketball career at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. While there, he received the Defensive Player of the Year Award and was named All-Conference. He completed his degree in Management Marketing.
He now resides in Currituck County, North Carolina with his wife, the former Debbie Eason.
