Sylvia Duke Carraway is the daughter of Murfreesboro natives Jim and Genny Duke. Carraway had traveled around the world with her military family before she ended up at Chowan College in the fall of 1972. At the time, Chowan only offered two sports for females: basketball and volleyball. She played both and even had the same uniform for both sports. Upon graduation from Chowan, Carraway transferred to Carson Newman College where she continued her career in both volleyball and basketball. She finished her career out at Coker College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1976.

Carraway continued to stay active in athletics after her graduation, playing softball in different leagues wherever her military family would take her. In 1990, she suffered an injury that would no longer allow her to play softball.

Carraway has had many jobs in many places around the world. She has been a physical education teacher for American Schools in Germany, and also ran sports programs for several thousand US troops as a Sports Specialist for the Army.

Carraway has two children, Kacy and Brett. Carraway retired from the US Air Force and is now currently employed by NASA as an Aerospace Physiologist in the Human Test Support Group.
