John Wallace Daniel, Sr. is known as the “First Football Coach” at Chowan College. Daniel was hired in 1934 to head up the first team fielded by the College. Thus, he was the very first football coach to ever win or lose a game in football history at Chowan College.

Daniel came to Chowan by way of the University of North Carolina, where he was a star on the football field from 1929-1933. Daniel started at halfback in both his junior and senior seasons.  In his senior season, Daniel ran a kick off back for 98 yards against the University of Florida, a record that stood for over 30 seasons.

Daniel coached the Braves for two years and was also the Head Baseball Coach and Head Women’s Basketball Coach for those two years.

In 1936, he became the Division Manager at Reynolds Tobacco Company.
