Martin Darrell Williams was inducted into the Chowan University “Jim Garrison” Sports Hall of Fame after two stellar playing seasons (1986-1988) under then-Head Coach Jim Garrison. The James Island, South Carolina native was a three sport, stand out athlete at James Island High School in SC. He was a three-time All-State Defensive Team selection as well as a North-South All-Star selection. Williams also excelled on the wrestling mat where he was chosen as All-State three times and finished 3rd in the Junior National Championships in Iowa. He was also chosen as All-State in Track and Field in shot put and discus at James Island High.
Williams' athletic abilities caught the attention of Garrison and he was recruited to anchor the Chowan defensive line from 1986-1988. Williams was a integral part of the 1988 East Bowl Championship and was named All-Conference, Conference Defensive Player of the Year and All-American in that season. Williams graduated from Chowan with an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration.
Williams then went on to continue his football and educationial careeers at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He experienced storied success at UT as an All-SEC selection as well as being honored with SEC Defensive Player of the Week three times in two seasons. Williams graduated magna cum laude from UT in 1990 with a degree in Business Administration. Following graduation from UT, Williams was signed to the Atlanta Falcons as a practice team member. In 1992, he was hired by the Charleston County School District, where he is still currently employed. He is an assistant principal, overseeing the Community Education efforts of his school with Adult Education, After School, and Rural Outreach. He coaches three sports, Football, Wrestling, and Track and Field.
Williams is on the board for the Payne Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church and mentors a group of boys within the church, Souljas for Christ.
Williams has one daughter, Jalyn LaVon Williams, with ex-wife, Ms. Cynthia E.S. Williams.
