Meet Murf

Murf_Da_Hawk_2Meet Murf, the newest hatch in the athletic department!

Murf was introduced to the Chowan University Community on September 9, 2006 at the University Celebration football game. It was a story-book ending for the former mascot, as a Brave parachuted to the 50 yard line just prior to kick off . He handed the game ball to the new mascot, the Hawk, and ran off into the distance, waving to a standing and cheering crowd.

In May of that same year Chowan University President Dr. M. Christopher White announced that the nickname would be changed from Braves to Hawks in accordance with the NCAA's ruling on hostile nicknames.

The Hawk received his identity after a two month online contest which drew over 200 potential names. Dr. White and select staff members reviewed the entries and finally chose "Murf". Although Murf was visible in the campus community he was officially Knighted in a mock ceremony in November of 2006. He has been entertaining the campus and the community ever since.

If you would like Murf to appear at your campus or community function, please call the athletic department at (252) 398-1239.

Are you entertaining and full of personality? Interested in showing your Hawks spirit and having fun at athletic games and events? Then consider being the Hawks' Mascot, "MURF".
