Bob Ryan attended Hermitage High School in Richmond, Virginia. While at Hermitage, he participated in both football and track. Upon graduation in 1961, he enrolled at Chowan College where he played football under Jim Garrison and served as Captain. While at Chowan, Ryan received All-Conference awards and in 1962 he received Honorable Mention All-American for his play at defensive end. He was also selected MVP of the 1962 team.

After graduation from Chowan in 1963, Ryan attended East Carolina University where he lettered in football. Ryan also played in the 1964 Tangerine Bowl, a bowl game that the Pirates won.  Ryan went on to earn his Master’s of Education Administration from William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1972. Ryan taught and coached high school football and track for 33 years in the state of Virginia.

Ryan resides in Richmond, Virginia with his wife, 
 Ray Waple Ryan. They have two daughters, Christy and Kelly. Ryan is an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church where he served as vestryman and member of the board for the senior group.
