Dr. Raymond Hargus Taylor and his family have been loyal fans and supporters of Chowan athletic teams since 1963. Dr. Taylor has maintained a particularly close relationship with the men’s basketball program since 1977. From 1977-89, he managed almost daily contact with the coaches and team members through service as the “unofficial” chaplain to the team. Dr.Taylor’s duties included traveling with the team and preparation of occasional programs for district or regional tournaments hosted by Chowan College. During these same years he also assisted with the academic advisement of student-athletes assigned to the coaches. Dr. Taylor has also been a member of the college’s Athletics Committee and of the Board of Directors of the Braves Club Foundation.

Dr. Taylor received his Associate’s degree from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky; his B.A degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee; and his B.D. and Th.D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Taylor served as Chaplain to Chowan College from 1963 until 1990 when he became Assistant to the President and Director of Denominational Relations. He also served as the Chairman of the Department of Religion & Philosophy.
