Lawrence Lowell Edwards came to Chowan from Spring Hope High School in 1965 where he would be a star on the football field for then head coach, Jim Garrison. His times at Chowan were marked with success both on the field and on Chowan’s main campus. The 1967 All-Conference defensive lineman and team MVP also served as the Vice President for the Chowan Sophomore class.

Edwards' play on the football gridiron took him to Temple University where he was a letter winner for two years, 1967-1969. He made such an impression on the Temple coaching staff that he stayed on for the 1969 season to serve as a Graduate Assistant Coach. He earned his B.S. from Temple in 1969 and was hired by Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia as a teacher. While in Richmond he continued with his football career playing at the semi-professional level for the Richmond Saints.

In 1972, Edwards married Karen Dollar and two years later welcomed their first born son, Adam. Their second son, Aaron, came three years later in 1977. During this time, Edwards was teaching and coaching in Nash County, North Carolina (1971-1974). He also had stops at Andrew High School and Rock Ridge High School. At Rock Ridge (1975-1978), Edwards was the head coach and led his team to a 1-A State Play-off game. He returned to Wilson in 1979 and took over the Head Coaching job at Wilson Hunt High. In his first season, he led the team to a perfect 10-0 record. He continued with his teaching career and at both the elementary and middle school levels and in 1981 served as the head football coach for Southern Nash High School. He wrapped up his career in education at Nash Central Middle School as a North Carolina History teacher and in 2001 retired from that position. After sitting out of education for a few years, Edwards decided to teach at Red Oak Middle School from 2005-2007.

Edwards stayed active in the Nash County community, serving on the Southern Nash High School Athletics Boosters Club as President from 1989-1995. He continues to be an active member of Peachtree Baptist Church, the oldest Baptist Church in Nash County. Edwards teaches Sunday School classes and is a Deacon at Peachtree Baptist and is active on several church committees. He is also a member of the North Carolina Baptist Men Disaster Relief Team.

Edwards and his wife, Karen, reside in Spring Hope, North Carolina. He now spends his time enjoying his retired days fishing, playing golf, and working to better his community through the Peachtree Baptist Church and the Momeyer Ruritan Club.
