Gary Mattison came to Chowan in 1986 from Raleigh, North Carolina where he was not only a standout basketball player for Broughton High School, but also one of the top players in the state.
The sharp-shooting, high scoring Mattison caught the attention of Chowan's Bob Burke who landed him as a highly touted prep player. Mattison came to Chowan with stellar high school accolades. In his senior year, he was named the MVP of the State Championship Tournament and a starter for the East Team in the North Carolina East vs. West High School All-Star game.
His scoring prowess continued at Chowan and under Burke, Mattison became the all time leading scorer in Chowan Junior College history. During his two year stay at Chowan (1986-1988), Mattison totaled a school record of 1,352 points.  Â
Chowan's record during Mattison's stay was an outstanding 55-11. He led the then Braves to their second appearance in the NJCAA Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas, where the Braves finished as one the top 16 teams in the country. While at the NJCAA Championships, he was selected to the NJCAA Olympic Trials team. Mattison is the only Chowan player to ever receive this honor. Mattison was the Player of the Year in the Conference and the Region IX Player of the Year. He also holds the school's junior college record for scoring 45 points in one game.
"Gary Mattison was a great talent; he was a combination of scorer as well as an outstanding shooter. He played within our system and his scoring record was an outstanding achievement considering that he played with several other Division I players on his team," stated Coach Bob Burke.Â
Mattison initially signed early in November of his sophomore season at Chowan with NC State; but eventually transferred to NCAA Division II institution, Saint Augustine's College (now University) in his hometown of Raleigh. At Saint Augustine's he led them in scoring both seasons and finished with 1,211 points. During his senior year, Mattison led NCAA Division II in scoring nationally with a 29.4 per game scoring average.Â
Mattison's combination of total points during his four year career at both schools was an amazing 2,563 total points.Â
Mattison currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.
