George Koonce, Jr. attended Chowan College from 1987-1989.  He was known as one of the most notable football players that ever attended Chowan. During the 1988 season he paced the team with 131 tackles from at the linebacker position. The Braves went 7-4 that year and earned a spot in the prestigious East Bowl, where they beat Dean Junior College handedly 50-7. Koonce was named the Coastal Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1988.

Upon graduating from Chowan, Koonce was awarded a football scholarship from East Carolina University. He thrived in Greenville for two seasons.

Koonce then pursued his dreams of playing in the National Football League and worked his way through the Green Bay Packers organization as a linebacker in 1992. He was also a part of the 1996 Super Bowl Championship Team Packers.  Koonce spent ten seasons in the NFL, playing for the Packers and ending his career with the Seattle Seahawks.
