Billy Edwards was a standout basketball player at Chowan in the early 1950’s. In 1950, playing for head coach Melvin Layton, Edwards was the team’s leading scorer with 196 points. Although he was described as a slow mover, he was a speed demon on the basketball court. That same year, Edwards was named Chowan’s May King, an honored garnered by student vote.

For the past 35 years, Edwards, who owns Mid-City Motors in Murfreesboro, has been an active member of the Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce, including a term as president. He was a charter member and past president of the Murfreesboro Jaycees, served as town councilman from 1977-1981, coached little league baseball and currently serves on the Hertford County Planning and Zoning Board. Edwards is also very involved in his church, serving as a youth Sunday School teacher at Murfreesboro Baptist for five years and serving on the Board of Deacons for two terms.

Edwards served as the President of the Braves Club from 1983-1985 and was a member of the Braves Club Board of Directors in 1981-1983 and 1985-1987.

Edwards passed away in September of 1999.
