James Doggett came to then-Chowan College from Reidsville High School after being recruited by then-Head Coach, Bob Burke. Burke noticed the 6’5’’ forward after he posted a successful scholastic career for Reidsville High School.

“James Doggett came to Chowan as one of the most fundamentally sound players I have seen,” said Burke. “After his sophomore season, it was safe to say that he was the best fundamental player I have ever coached.”

After playing as a reserve player in his first season with the then-Braves, the forward developed into a powerhouse in his sophomore season. He poured in 14 points an outing, and helped the 1989-1990 team to a 23-10 season record. Doggett was named the team’s  Defensive Player of the Year and Team MVP that same season. His play earned him 1st Team All-Region X honors as well as All Carolinas Conference Team honors.

In his two year-career with the then-Braves, Doggett was a part of 50 wins and just 14 loses. Doggett’s play at Chowan garnered him the attention of several four-year college coaches, but the Reidsville native opted to finish his education and playing career at Winston-Salem State University, under legendary Coach, Clarence “Big House” Gaines. He started two seasons with the Rams basketball team.

“In my opinion, he was a quiet assassin in all aspects of his playing career at Chowan,” said Burke. “He continued with that same mentality at Winston-Salem State. He was considered a top newcomer to the program.”

“He was a leader to his teammates, already in the Hall of Fame, Bryan Hill, Fred Vinson, and James Thompson,” continued Burke. “He had a competitive spirit and understood the team concept better than anyone.”

Doggett helped to coach at his alma mater, Reidsville High School, for two seasons after graduating from Winston-Salem State University. He served as an assistant boys basketball coach, helping the team to a perfect 30-0 season and State Championship Title in 1994.

Doggett currently resides in Reidsville, North Carolina. He is employed for General Dynamics as a Manufacturing Associate, specializing in underwater communication systems. He is joined at the induction ceremony by his girlfriend, Dawn Marshall. He has two children, a daughter, Jamese’ Doggett, and a son, Robert Doggett. He has two grandchildren, Jordyn, and King. In his free time, Doggett enjoys spending time with family and friends. He is also an avid golfer, playing year round.
