Janet Collins is known as one of the winningest volleyball coaches at Chowan.

During her tenure at Chowan College, Coach Collins had over 300 wins in the National Junior College Athletic Association. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Westhampton of the University of Richmond and her Masters from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She also attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary for one year.

Collins began her employment at Chowan College in 1964 as a health and physical education professor.  During that time there were no organized women’s sports offered. From 1964-75 she was responsible for women’s basketball, softball, volleyball, women’s intramurals, majorettes, and Bravettes (a synchronized dance group that performed at athletic events).
In 1978 she focused on coaching volleyball. In 1985, 1986, and 1989 Coach Collins' teams were Region X Champions and advanced to the NJCAA National playoffs. In recognition of her outstanding ability and performance, in 1994 she was awarded the North Carolina Governor’s Award of Excellence for Coaching and Administration. Janet is also Professor Emeritus at Chowan.

Janet passed away in January of 2024.
