Steve Flack came to Chowan in the fall of 1970 as one of the most decorated athletes to have graduated from Dinwiddie High School in Dinwiddie, Virginia. Steve earned 11 letters in four sports at Dinwiddie High and was named Senior Athlete of the Year. His diversified talents landed him at Chowan College where he continued to succeed as a three-sport star. He played football, basketball, and baseball during his two-year tenure at Chowan, lettering in all three sports.
Flack enlisted in the United States Marine Corp after receiving his A.A. from Chowan. For two years Flack made a name for himself in the Corp, earning the honors of Platoon Honor Man, Series Honor Man, and the Blues Award. Following his stint in the USMC, Steve returned closer to his home where he taught and coached at Broadway High School and Spotswood High School.
In 1995 Steve returned to a campus he was all too familiar with, Chowan College. He came back to Chowan to serve as an assistant baseball coach and instructor in the Sport Science and Physical Education Department. In 1996 he was promoted to Head Coach of the then-Braves baseball team. Steve compiled a 176-168-2 overall record from 1996 until his retirement in 2004. He left his mark on the field but also in the classroom as a dedicated instructor. He initiated the start of the Sport Management program at Chowan and served as the Director of the Sport Management until his retirement.
During his tenure as head coach, the baseball program was one of the winningest programs in the school’s history. Under Steve the then-Braves tallied five seasons with 20 or more wins. He left Chowan as the winningest coach in the program’s NCAA DIII history.
Flack retired from Chowan in 2004 and in an interview with a local media outlet, he fought back tears recalling his time at Chowan. When asked how he would like to be remembered he responded, “I would like to be remembered as a good man, a good teacher, and as a coach that taught his players to accept defeat but to also bounce back on the athletic field and in life.”
Steve was instrumental in many facility additions and upgrades during his tenure at Chowan. He donated countless hours and dollars to the program while coaching to ensure the team’s success. He was meticulous in the upkeep of the baseball field and its surroundings.
Steve passed away in April of 2013. He was a graduate of Chowan College, East Tennessee State University, and Southern Mississippi University. Just before his death he was serving as a board member on the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Sports Commission. He was active in both basketball and baseball officiating and in the Chowan Alumni Association. He also served as a part-time instructor and faculty member at James Madison University in the School of Hospitality, Recreation, and Sport Department.
He married long-time love, Cookie Lam, in August of 2005. Steve and Cookie owned and operated a restaurant together in Harrisonburg named Downtown 56. Steve was inducted into the Dinwiddie High School Hall of Fame in 2002.
