Michelle E. Phillips is a native of Kent County, Virginia. Phillips has always been involved with community and school programs. Even in her high school days she was the Trojan Club President, an active member of the choir, and served as a representative for her local Elks Lodge as a debutante during the annual coronation. Phillips also excelled in sports being a standout member of her volleyball, basketball and softball teams. This excellence did not stop after high school as she found her way to Chowan.
While attending Chowan, Phillips participated in volleyball for two years and softball for one. Though only participating in softball for one year, Phillips made a quick impact. She received the All-Tournament award at the conference tournament.
However, volleyball was her main focus at Chowan and Phillips was a team leader in volleyball as well. She earned All-Team Region X, and also the coveted All-American Honorable Mention her sophomore year. After her two years, Phillips graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Sport Medicine. While trying to further her education and career in volleyball, Phillips enrolled at West Georgia College, a Division II school. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Phillips was unable to finish her education at West Georgia. However, due to Phillips’s determination and persistence she gained her Bachelors of Science in Organizational Management from Ashford University years later.
In 1989, Phillips returned to her home town and began working for parks and recreation. Phillips still holds a seasonal title with the parks and recreation department today. She also began working for Kent County Public Schools as an instructional assistant and assistant volleyball coach. For more than 16 years Phillips has coached junior varsity and varsity volleyball, junior varsity softball, varsity cheerleading and junior varsity and varsity boys’ basketball at the high school level.
Along with guiding young men and women both athletically and mentally, Phillips is an active member of her church where she holds the office of administrative board secretary. She is also a member of the bible study of “Work in Progress Ministries.”
Phillips has used her passion for helping and guiding youth and her trust and love for God to help guide her through her obstacles of life which have molded her into the individual that she is today.
