Charles “Mort” Taylor attended Chowan from 1964-1966 and was a two year member of the football team. Taylor played football under Jim Garrison in the fall of 1964. He missed the 1965 season with an injury but returned in 1966 for his sophomore season.
Taylor returned to his hometown of South Hill and worked for two years with the Virginia Department of Highways as an inspector. He was also actively involved with the youth football leagues in the South Hill area.
In 1969, Taylor attended East Tennessee State University where he earned his B.S. in Health and Physical Education. Taylor then taught and coached near his hometown for four years before entering graduate school at Indiana State University. At ISU, Taylor earned his M.S. and went on to become an athletic trainer.
In 1984, Taylor opened “Taylor Insurance” and has continued to sell and service insurance policies for more than 20 years.
Taylor is a member of the South Hill Chamber of Commerce and is active in the First Baptist Church of South Hill. He is married to Joyce and together they have three children, Angela, Chuck and Robbie.
