Spencer White came to Chowan in the fall of 1965 from nearby Bertie County High School. The four-sport Bertie High School star played two years under then-head coach Jim Garrison at Chowan College. Garrison took pride in recruiting local talent and was excited to see White show up for practice in the fall of 1965.

White played two seasons with the then-Braves and in 1966 earned All-Conference honors. His football days continued as he was accepted to Temple University. He spent two seasons on the gridiron with the Owls, starting both seasons. He helped the team to a 1967 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship.

White’s love for the athletics kept him in the game so to speak. After earning his degree from Temple, White picked up the passion for coaching. He was asked to stay on to help coach the 1969 Temple Freshman football squad where he helped the team to a perfect 6-0 record.

Although he spent three years in Pennsylvania, North Carolina was still his home state. He returned to his home state in the Rocky Mount area. He spent five seasons at Northern Nash High School (1970-1975) and accumulated a 40-17 overall record as the football coach. He also served as the wrestling coach and amassed a 42-15 record over five years. He had stints at Southern Nash, Columbia, and Perquimins High Schools before settling in at his alma mater, Bertie County High School, in 1989.

At Bertie, he continued to thrive as a coach and educator. He coached football, wrestling, and softball there. He accounted for 107 wins with just 47 losses and five conference championships from 1989-1995 on the football gridiron. On the wrestling mat he tallied a 64-27 record with two conference championships, and in softball he tallied a 90-38 overall coaching record with three conference titles.

White is active in the Greens Cross Baptist Church community where he serves as a Deacon. He is the Head Usher and Chairs the Building and Grounds Committee and Lay Renewal Weekend Committee.  He is also a member of the Historic Hope Plantation Foundation and a member of Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park in Scotland Neck, N.C.

He and his wife, Gaynor, have one son, Brian White. Brian and his wife Kayla have one son, Hunter White. They reside in Windsor, N.C.
