Gary Tolley attended Chowan College from 1964-1966. Tolley was a two-year letter winner and All-District performer in football for Coach Jim Garrison. During his tenure there, Chowan was ranked as high as third in the nation. Tolley played left corner and safety on defensive, running back and halfback on offensive and also returned punts and kicks. Outside of athletics, Tolley was President of the sophomore class at Chowan, was named an "Outstanding Sophomore," and was named “Best All Around.”

Following an outstanding career at Chowan, Tolley went on to the University of Richmond where he played left corner and safety and returned punts and kicks for the Spiders. Tolley was a member of the Richmond Rugby Club from 1967-1976 where he played right wing.

Tolley owns his own electrical company, is a Deacon at Smyrna Baptist Church and a member of the Chowan Braves Club.

Gary Tolley is married to his wife, Mary Jane, and  together they have three children and three grandchildren.
