Daryl Allen was a native of Northeastern, NC.  Allen played football and baseball at Chowan College. He received his associate’s degree from Chowan and upon being inducted in the Hall of Fame remarked, “I can look back at all the good times I had while attending Chowan, but I can also say that I learned some positive things about life while I was here, and I have used those as instruments to teach the kids I have since coached.” After Chowan, Allen continued his education at Guilford College, earning his bachelors of science in Health and P.E.   With football being his sport, Coach Allen coached for 52 years in Northeastern NC, retiring twice from Hertford County High School. He never really retired from coaching….helping his son, Eddie, at Hertford County Middle School later in life.

Allen’s career record of 305-118 puts him eighth on the all-time coaching victories list for football in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. His Ahoskie/HCHS teams won seven outright conference championships, and participated in nearly 40 state play-off games, to include winning four Eastern State titles (1974, 1979 and 1986 at Ahoskie High School and 1988 at Hertford County High School).

Nearly 70 of his former players went on to play college football, three of which made it to the NFL – Timmy Newsome (Dallas Cowboys), Bobby Futrell (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Sam Harrell (Minnesota Vikings). Another former player, Greg Harrell, later became a member of the U.S. Olympic Bobsled team.

Allen passed away in 2014 leaving behind his wife, Katherine Futrell Allen, two daughters, a son, seven grandchildren and one great grandson.
