Justin Bagbey came to Chowan University in the fall of 2008 from Virgilina, Virginia. The Halifax County High School graduate excelled on the diamond under then-coach Aaron Carroll. Bagbey made an immediate impact on the diamond in his first season. He set six single-season batting records in his first season donning the CU blue and white. Those six records still stand to this day. These records included 17 single-season homeruns and a .478 single-season batting average. That same year, Justin led all NCAA D2 schools in slugging percentage and was named NCAA Statistical Champion for his .985 single-season slugging percentage.
Justin followed up his breakout freshman season with three more successful seasons for the Hawks. In 2010 he posted a .432 batting average with 12 doubles and 12 homeruns. The sophomore sensation was named CIAA Player of the Year, All-CIAA First Team, ABCA All Region First Team, and NCCAA South Region Player of the Year. Justin went on to earn ABCA All-Region honors in his junior and senior years to go with All-CIAA First Team accolades.
“Justin Bagbey was one of the best, if not the best, all around hitters to ever play at Chowan,” said Aaron Carroll, who recruited Justin to Chowan. “He was a pure power hitter but also very disciplined at the plate. He could hit for average and drive in runs. He was also a solid defensive first baseman, hard worker, and a great teammate. Justin was a true student-athlete,” said Carroll.
Justin still owns 11 Chowan Baseball career records and 6 single-season records. The first baseman was no slouch in the field and tallied a .986 fielding percentage. Justin left Chowan in 2012 having set and then shattered most offensive records. He is known as one of the most prolific offensive players in the history of the Chowan baseball program. Justin graduated in 2012 with a degree in Education from Chowan.
