Peyton Barton attended Chowan College from 1968-1970 where he was an All-American offensive and defensive lineman for the football team under Coach Jim Garrison. He was also a member of the baseball team under Coach Jerry Hawkins. In his sophmore season at Chowan, Barton received the Most Valuable Male Athlete Award for his efforts on the football and baseball fields.

Barton earned an athletic scholarship to Furman University in South Carolina after graduating from Chowan College. At Furman, he was an All-Conference offensive lineman for the football program while also continuing to play baseball in the spring season. In his senior season, he earned a spot on the All-Star team for the annual Blue Grey game.

He earned his B.A. in Philosophy and went on to start his own business after graduation. He currently owns a seafood business in Washington, D.C. and resides in Dunnsville, Virginia.
