Fred Vinson attended Chowan College from 1989-1991 after graduating from nearby Northampton County High School East in Conway, North Carolina. Vinson's high school play garnered the attention of Bob Burke and the rest is Chowan College history.
Known for his strong work ethic and academics, Vinson was named Most Outstanding Male Athlete, Region X Player of the Year, First Team All-Region X All-Conference, Carolina JUCO Conference Player of the Year, All-Tournament Region X, and Most Valuable Player during his time at Chowan.
Vinson completed his education and playing career at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. As a guard at Georgia Tech, Vinson was MVP for the 1993-1994 season, where he was the team's third leading scorer. An outstanding long-range shooter, Vinson led the Yellow Jackets in three-point field goals (70) and three-point percentage (.402) in that same season.
After his college career, Vinson went on to play for the NBA's  Atlanta Hawks and Seattle Supersonics. He finished his professional playing career overseas.Â
After retirement, Vinson was named Assistant Coach/Director of Player Programs for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2007.Â
In 2010, Vinson accepted an Assistant Coaching position with the New Orleans Hornets (now New Orleans Pelicans).Â
