Bobby Gray, a native of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., was a two-sport athlete at Chowan who was most notably known for his football career. Gray was the first Junior College All-American that legendary Coach Jim Garrison had at Chowan. Garrison quipped, “I remember a particular game with Gardner-Webb in which Bobby had three teeth knocked out while returning a kick-off. Instead of calling it quits, he had his mouth packed with cotton and immediately returned to the game.” Gray was tabbed as a NJCAA first team All-American halfback while being voted as Best All-Around Athlete in football and track at Chowan.

After college, Gray went on to become an account manager for Quinn Wholesale Company in Wilmington, N.C.

Gray passed away in August of 2021.
