CU Baseball Takes Two from IUP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University baseball team swept  Saturday's games against the Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in dramatic fashion taking game one 5-4 and game two 12-10.  Chowan moves to 7-8 on the season while IUP falls to 0-2.  In game one the scoring for the Hawks was started in the fifth inning led by Brandon Mack getting a base hit up the middle.  Eddie Overton drives in two RBIs with a single of his own to tie it at two apiece.  IUP puts the pressure on again in the seventh when Robbie Zinsmeister leads off with a solo homerun followed by two more base hits by Lupia and Foster to regain the lead at 4-2.  Zinsmeister was a single shy of the cycle for the game.

Down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning the Hawk bats come alive.  The bottom of the seventh started off with an Evan Seymour draw a base on balls.  Justin Bagbey follows that up with a base knock up the middle with Seymour coming around to score.  Michael Strobel takes Bagbey's place on second; Ryan Moore gets on by an error by the second baseman.  Eddie Overton sacrifices himself to push the runners to second and third.  William Ward takes a 2-2 pitch into right field to score Strobel and Moore for the win.

Brett Garrett gets a no decision after pitching five complete innings surrendering two runs off eight hits.  While Ryan Moore gets the win pitching in relief for the Hawks.  Moore moves to 2-1 on the season.  Christian Wolosik gets the loss for IUP.

John DesChamps took the mound in game two for the Hawks.  DesChamps also received a no decision pitching four and a third innings giving up eight runs off eight hits.  Evan Hart pitched the remaining two and two thirds innings picking up his first win of his college career.  Hart gave up one run off two hits and striking out two.  The starter for IUP lasted only three innings surrendering six runs (three earned) off five hits and five walks.  Austin Mock picked up the loss for the Crimson Hawks pitching one and two thirds innings giving up three runs off two hits and a walk.
Game two demonstrated a strong offensive outing for both teams compiling 22 runs and 20 hits.  IUP starts off the scoring with back to back singles followed by a two RBI double by Dylan Songer.  The Hawks put themselves on the board with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning.  Ryan Moore and Blake Leebrick single in the inning while Brandon Mack doubles in two runs.  Josh Catalano, Evan Seymour and Justin Bagbey reach base by hit by pitch and base on balls respectively. 

Justin Bagbey pushes the lead to five with a solo homerun of his own in the bottom of the fourth.  IUP makes a mid game rally in the top of the fifth with base hits by Cory Sawka, Mike Lupia, Troy Foster, and Aaron Lupia.  The Hawks gave out four walks and two hit batters during the rally.  The Hawks make a rally of their own taking the lead back with a five run inning of their own.  With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning Eddie Overton gets the rally started with a base knock.  Ryan Moore gets on base for the third time in the game drawing a walk.  Blake Leebrick hits his second base hit of the game scoring Overton from second.  Colby Wiggins draws another walk in the inning.  With bases loaded Josh Catalano comes through with a bases clearing double and advances to third on the throw home where Wiggins beats the throw in from the centerfielder.  Catalano scores on the next pitch off a passed ball. 
Josh Catalano and Eddie Overton finishes the day with four hits.  Overton had four RBIs where Catalano and Bagbey finished with three.  Ward finishes with two RBIs.  Justin Bagbey finished 2-3 from the plate with a homerun and drawing five walks.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow against Indiana University of Pennsylvania for another non-conference double header starting at 12:00pm.
