Goldson's Golden Homerun Sparks Hawks Win Over Ferrum at Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - Ahmaad Goldson's grand slam in the bottom of the 8th inning was the answer that the Hawks needed to pick up their first win of the 2026 on Friday afternoon. Chowan came from behind to beat Ferrum College 14-9 in Conference Carolinas play. Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the 8th inning, and facing a two strike count, Goldson blasted a bases loaded, homerun in the bottom of the 8th to right field, giving the Hawks a 12-9 lead. They went on to plate two more runs to get up on Ferrum 14-9 to get the win. 

Friday's win marks Bob Smith's first win as a head collegiate coach. The Hawks pounded out 15 hits in the win, including four doubles, and Goldson's golden homerun.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Zackary Wilson got the nod on the mound to start the game. After Ferrum jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in their first at-bat,  he picked some insurance in the bottom of the 2nd inning when the Hawks exploded for four runs. Goldson singled to open the 2nd inning with Jordan Turner following him up with a single of his own on the ensuing at-bat. Goldson scored on a throwing error by Ferrum. Landon Carnley drew a walk and advanced to third base when Derrick Davis reached base on a fielding error by the Panthers. Peyton Clay doubled to centerfield scoring Carnley and Davis to get up on the Panthers 4-3. 

Ferrum plated six runs over the third through the top of the 6th inning to spread their lead to 9-6 over the Hawks. Chowan countered in the bottom of the 7th inning with four runs of their own, capped off by a 2 RBI double by Nick Reiss. Trailing 9-6, the table was set for the bottom of the 8th inning and Goldson's grand slam. With one out, Clay collected an infield single and advanced to second when Ty Boze singled down the right field line on the ensuing at-bat. Josh Tripp moved the runners a bag on a ground out. KJ Durand Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bags for Goldson. Goldson took the full count pitch and drove it over the right field fence to give the Hawks a 12-9 lead over the Panthers. Jordan Turner and Reiss picked up singles before scoring on an error and an RBI single by Ethan Robinson

With a 14-9 lead, Chowan's Teray Cherry went to work on the mound in the top of the 9th to retire the side. Cherry picked up the win on the mound after throwing in relief of Wilson. Cherry threw 6.2 innings, striking out 3 batters, scattering 4 hits and giving up 3 runs. 

Goldson was golden in the game. He finished 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored and four RBI. Jordan Turner turned in a 3-4 plate appearance with 2 runs scored, a double, and an RBI. Clay ended the game with 3 hits, including 2 doubles and 2 runs scored, and two RBI. Reiss ended the game with 2 hits and 3 RBI. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks and the Panthers will face off on Saturday in a double dip that is set to start at 11:00am at Hawkins Field.
