GLEN ALLEN, VA- The Chowan University men's golf team competed in the opening round of the 2017 CIAA Golf Championship on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks carded a 325 team total to finish tied for third place with Livingstone College out of eight competing teams. Virginia Union University holds a three stroke lead after turning in a team score of 322 on Thursday. Fayetteville State University follows closely in second place with a 323 first round total.
Virginia State University carded a 359 on the afternoon to sit in fifth place. Johnson C. Smith University (362), Elizabeth City State University (396), and Saint Augustine's University (450) hold on to sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively heading into Friday.
CU's
Jordan Francis lead the 39-player field with a 74 in the first round of play.
Billy Britton and
Christian Fleetwood both shot a 83 for the Blue and White and is tied for 12
th individually.
Rich Edwards carded a 85 in the first day of play, while
Steven Rhinard sits in 26
th place with a round one score of 91 for Chowan.
Friday features the second and final round of play at the 2017 CIAA Golf Championship. Tee time is slated for 9am. The awards ceremony and announcement of All-CIAA honorees will take place at the conclusion of competition.
