Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team moved to 3-6 after falling to West Liberty 11-8 in the final game of the three-game series with the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty got on the board first in the top of the 2
nd inning. Coby Eckstein led the inning off with a triple to straight away centerfield. He scored on the ensuing at-bat on a sacrifice fly to left field by Tyler Ramsay.
Chowan answered in their next at bat when
Trent Brosdahl scored on an infield throwing error by the Hilltoppers.
With the score knotted at 1-1, Chowan went to work in the bottom of the third inning. Chowan tallied four straight hits to take the lead at 3-1.
Zack Cooper got the inning started with an infield. He scored on a double to left center field by Brosdohl.
Harry Markotay plated Brosdahl on a single back up the middle. The Hawks took a 3-1 lead to give Lipscomb some insurance on the mound.
Lipscomb pitched out of a sticky top of the fourth inning with some help from his defense. CU's
Marquise Lanier made a throw from right field to Brosdahl to stop Eckstein from crossing the plate on a Trey Smith single to right field.
Lanier put up another run on the board for Chowan when he plated
Connor Arcobasso on a double to left center field, giving the Hawks a 4-1 cushion heading into the top of the 5
th inning.
The Hilltoppers used a five-run 5
th inning to get back on top in the game.
Vinny Puma entered the game in relief of Lipscomb, pitching out of a bases loaded jam.
The Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the 5
th inning on a sacrifice fly by Arcobasso, scoring
Emory Chopp from third base, but still trailed 6-5.
The Hilltoppers added another run in the top of the 6
th inning to spread the lead to 7-5. Chowan cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the frame when Cooper scored on a double to the right center gap by
Harry Markotay. But West Liberty added three runs in their next at-bat to spread the lead to 10-6.
The Hawks kept chipping away at the Hilltopper lead, plating another run in the bottom of the 7
th inning.
Tyler Jones came in to pinch hit and led the inning off with a single to right field. He scored on an Arcobasso single to left field. The Hawks stranded two runners to end the momentum.
Brosdahl led the bottom of the 8
th inning off with a double to right center field, his second of the game. He advanced to third base on a balk by the Hilltoppers and scored on an infield out to cut the West Liberty lead to 10-8. The Hilltoppers added another run in the top of the 9
th inning to take the 11-8 lead and the eventual win.
Chowan tallied 14 hits in the game. Arcobasso, Lanier, Cooper, Brosdahl, Markotay, and Chopp each tallied two hits. Markotay also had three runs batted in and Brosdahl scored three runs.
Bailey Lipscomb was credited with the loss on the mound after throwing 4.2 innings. He gave up six runs on seven hits while striking out eight Hilltopper batters. Cody Shook was credited with win after coming in for relief. He threw 1.1 innings.
The Hawks will hit the field again on Tuesday, Febuary 21
st, when Barton College comes to town for a 2:00pm match up.
