Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC - The Chowan University baseball team took on West Liberty University in a non-conference double header on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks and Hillltoppers split play on the first day of the three-game series. The Hawks took game one of the series 8-3 but dropped game two with a final score of 9-3. Chowan moved to 3-5 after Saturday's split while the Hilltoppers even their record at 1-1.
Chowan won the first game of the doubleheader 8-3.
Jake Moore pitched six innings for his second win of the young season. Moore gave up seven hits and three runs while striking out three West Liberty batters. Moore got help from his offense after they exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Hawks scored seven runs off of six hits and two Hilltopper errors to give Moore the cushion he needed to pitch for the win.
Daniel Whitener came in to throw the 7th inning for Chowan.
Leading the way offensively for Chowan was
Marquise Lanier and
Trent Brosdahl. They both went 2-3 at the plate in game one.
Zack Cooper,
Robert Williams, and
Harry Markotay each added two runs batted in.
Greg Stagani picked up the loss after tossing four innings for the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty pounded out 13 hits in in route to a 9-3 second game win. Chowan was held to six hits.
Tre Harper picked up the loss after throwing 3.0 innings. He gave up six hits and five runs in the game.
Will Edwards and
Corey Fago each saw time in relief. Lanier garnered the team's only multiple hit game. He went 2-3 with a solo homerun.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, February 19th with a single, nine inning game. First pitch is set for 12:00pm at Hawkins Field.
