Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team suffered two losses on the opening day of play at the 2
nd Annual Spike-Out Hunger Challenge hosted by Winston-Salem State University. The Hawks fell to Lees-McRae 3-2 in the first match of the day before dropping a 3-1 decision to Slippery Rock University.
The Hawks battled through a competitive five sets against Lees-McRae in their first match of the season before falling 3-2. The Bobcats jumped to a quick lead in the match after escaping with 27-25 and 26-24 wins in the first two sets, respectively. Chowan stormed back in the third set, capturing a 25-19 win and edged Lees-McRae 26-24 in set four. The fifth set featured a competitive battle between both teams, with Lees-McRae edging the Hawks 15-13 down the final stretch to earn the win.
Morgan Spencer paced the Hawks with 15 kills in the first match of the season while
Suraya Chase followed with 14 kills on the afternoon.
Karisa Patterson dished out 24 assists while
Alyssa Born notched 13 to aid the effort.
Bailey Zavala recorded 18 digs in the first match for the Chowan Blue and White.
Haylee Leonard tallied 15 kills for the Lees-McRae with Madigan Gonzales and Logan Slusher adding nine kills apiece for the Bobcats in the win. Madison Martin tallied 21 digs over the course of five sets, followed by Courtney Weathersbee with 11 digs on the day.
In the second match of the day, the Hawks came out firing against Slippery Rock, earning a 25-23 win the first set. The Rock fought back to win the next three consecutive sets 25-15, 25-18, and 25-20 to secure the 3-1 match win.
Chase notched 14 kills in the setback, leading the effort for the Hawks.
Caitlin Turner followed with six kills while Zavala hauled in 14 digs. Born and Patterson each added 10 digs in the setback. Leah Jones paced Slippery Rock with 12 kills in the win while Brooke Bostwick and Kelsey Boyle notched 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Courtney Oberlander recorded 29 digs in the win.
Chowan returns to action on Saturday as the Hawks take on the University of Mount Olive at 11am and Kutztown University at 2pm.
