ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Chowan University volleyball team opened play at the Viking Classic on Friday afternoon, taking on West Chester University before battling tournament host Elizabeth City State University in a five-set thriller at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
The Hawks opened the day against West Chester, claiming the first set before the Golden Rams rallied to take the next three sets and the match, 3-1. Chowan then bounced back in a big way against Elizabeth City State, earning their first win of the 2026 season with a 3-2 victory after battling through five sets.
Anna Holcombe paced the Hawks with 19 digs in the opening match, while Andrea Krgovic turned in a season-best performance in the nightcap, recording a game-high 45 assists to help Chowan secure the first victory of the season.

Game One:
Rosa Collier led the attack with nine kills, adding two assists and a dig. Madison Henderson finished with eight kills, two blocks, and an assist, while Alauna Wilson-Linn added seven kills. Alanna Verma recorded five kills and three digs.
Holcombe finished with 19 digs to lead the Hawks defensive efforts, while Krgovic added 31 assists, two service aces, a block, and a kill. Kennedy Mills, Taylor Hill, and Alexa Fricker each contributed two kills.
Game Two:
Freshman Alexa Fricker powered the Hawks to their first win of the season, recording a game-high 17 kills while adding three service aces and four digs. Collier followed with 12 kills, while Jada Caruthers added nine kills, four assists, and a service ace.
Verma finished with eight kills, a service ace, and a dig, while Holcombe contributed 20 digs, an assist, and a kill. Krgovic turned in a standout performance with a game-high 45 assists to go along with five digs, a kill, and a service ace.
UP NEXT
Chowan will close out the Viking Classic with two matches on Saturday, September 5. The Hawks will open the day against Kutztown at 8:00 AM before wrapping up tournament play against Glenville State University at 2:30 PM.
