Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Winston-Salem State Spike-Out Hunger Challenge. The Hawks fell to Shepherd 3-1 in the opening match of the day and suffered a 3-1 setback to Fairmont State University in the weekend finale.
Chowan moves to 1-2 on the young season after Saturday's contests.
Shepherd grabbed the opening set 25-16 before Chowan answered with a 25-19 victory in set two. The Hawks held on in set three, but came up short in a 25-22 setback before the Rams responded with a 25-18 win in set four to earn the match victory.
Suraya Chase paced the effort in Chowan's first match of the day with 13 kills in the contest.
Brittany Tschida followed with eight kills while
Ashley Tutherow chipped in seven.
Becca Page tallied 16 assists while
Lindsey Denne dished out 15 of her own.
Cindy Ehrich tallied 25 digs for the Chowan Blue and White, leading the Hawks defensively.
Samanta Scroggins and Christine Jackson paced Shepherd with 12 kills apiece followed by Taylor Allen with nine kills in her first match of the day. Kelsey Anderson, Scroggins and Allen each tallied double-digit digs led by Scoggins with 14. Becca Kern and Cerya Dixon combined for 38 assists to aid the effort.
In the second match of the afternoon, Chowan battled early in the contest but was unable to recover after close a setback in the first set against Fairmont State (25-21). The Hawks recovered to steal a 25-22 victory in set two before dropping the third and fourth sets by identical 25-17 scores.
Tutherow continued to make an impact on the court with 14 kills in the contest. Chase chipped in eight kills while
Princess Chauni Green and
Brianna Smith added six kills piece. Page and Denne combined for 38 assists, led by Page with 23 while Ehrich grabbed a match-high 18 digs.
Kaitlyn Witsamen and Breanna Blot tallied 12 kills and 10 kills respectively for the Fighting Falcons while Jessica Furda tallied 42 assists in the victory. Erin Harwood and Mackenzie Marrison each had nine digs to lead the defensive effort for Fairmont State. The Fighting Falcons remain undefeated after the victory and post a 3-0 record on the young season.
The Hawks return to action on September 9
th when they travel to Wilson, North Carolina for a 7:00pm match-up against Barton College.
