Box Score MOUNT OLIVE- The Chowan University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win against the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday evening. The Hawks advance to 9-3 on the season, earning wins in each of their last eight matches. The Trojans slip to 2-12 on the season after the setback.
Chowan swept Mount Olive in straight sets, claiming set one 25-20, set two 25-21 and set three 25-17.
Ashley Tutherow collected a team-high nine kills in the contest while
Suraya Chase and
Brianna Smith each notched six kills apiece for the Chowan Blue and White.
Becca Page tallied assists while
Lindsey Denne dished out 14 assists. Smith hauled in 13 digs while
Cindy Ehrich notched nine digs.
Danielle Plante paced the Trojans with 11 kills followed by Alysha Burnett with 10 kills. Danielle Stachura and Nicole Karas tallied 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
In the first set, the Hawks and Trojans battled early on as neither team was able to establish a firm grip of the momentum. With Mount Olive holding a narrow 18-17 advantage late in the set, the Hawks took advantage of three Trojan errors to pull away 20-18. Chowan held on to the advantage for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-20 win behind a block by Tutherow and
Michelle Seiler.
Mount Olive grabbed an early 4-1 lead in set two and held on to the lead until the midway point when Smith knotted the score 9-9 with a kill. A Trojan attack error on the next play gave the Hawks the lead. With Chowan holding a 21-20 advantage, a 3-0 run gave the Hawks a comfortable 24-20 lead. A service error by the Hawks gave Mount Olive an additional point but a block by
Brittany Tschida secured the 25-21 win in set two.
The third set was another battle for control and momentum. With the score tied 13-13, Mount Olive used a kill by Mackenzie Call to gain the lead. A service ace pushed the Trojans ahead 15-13. The Hawks and Trojans exchanged points as the set continued until Mount Olive gained a 17-15 advantage using Plante's kill. Chowan responded with a 10-0 run to stop the upset threat and earned the 25-17 victory.
The Hawks return to conference play on October 3
rd and 4
th when they host the CIAA Round-Up.
