CU Baseball Takes Two from Post University

CU's Tyler Burden had a banner day in a two-game sweep of Post University
Box Score MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University baseball team moved to 6-5 after beating Post University in a non-conference double header on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks came from behind to take the first game 4-3 and battled out a 7-4 game two win. Post falls to 0-2 on the year after the series. Sunday's originally scheduled games with Post have been cancelled due to impending foul weather conditions.

Chowan jumped out to an early lead in game one after plating two runs in their first at-bat in the game. Gurganus started the inning off with a single and he scored when Tyler Burden drove a ball down the left field line for a double. Blake Eure scored Burden on a ground out for a 2-0 lead after their first at-bat.

Post got on the board in the top of the 4th inning after Don Walsh's single drove in Erik Rodriquez from 2nd base. They added two more runs in the 6th and 7th innings to take a 3-2 lead over the home standing Hawks.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th, the Hawks knotted the game at 3-3 when Eure drove in Burden on a single to right center field. With the game tied at 3-3, Burden came in to throw the 9th inning where he also picked up the win.

With the game knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th, the Hawks went to work. Jacob Nestor and Tanner Woods drew walks to open the inning. Will Gurganus plated Nestor on a double to right center field to win the game 4-3.

Burden picked up the win in relief of Tre Harper. Evan Hart started the game on the mound. He put in seven innings of work, allowing eight hits and three runs. He struck out three Post batters in 27 batters faced.

The Hawks totaled nine hits in the first game win. Gurganus was 2-5 in the game with an RBI and a run scored. Aaron Flanagan tallied two hits in the win while Burden was 1-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Hawks picked up where they left off in game one to take the 7-4 game two win for the two-game sweep of the Eagles. Chowan jumped out to another first inning lead after scoring two runs in their opening at-bat. They added runs in their next two at-bats to take a 4-2 lead over Post heading into the 4th inning. Post added a run in the 4th and 5th inning to tie the game at 4-4. Blake Eure opened the 1st inning with a two-run homer to get Chowan on the board first in the nightcap. He ended the nightcap 1-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. 

Austin McGhee started the game on the mound and threw three innings before being relieved by Bailey Lipscomb. Lipscomb pitched two innings giving up a run and a hit but getting the win in relief of McGhee after the Hawks grabbed a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the 5th.

Burden came in to throw the last three outs to pick up the save in the game, his second of the season.

The Hawks tallied 10 hits in game two led by Burden who went 2-4 with three RBI. Flanagan was 2-2 with a triple and an RBI. Kyle Cross went 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
Chowan will host East Stroudsburg University on February 21st and 22nd in a four game series. Both days the games will start at 12:00pm at Hawkins Field.
