Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHIPPENSBURG, PA- The Chowan University volleyball team saw a twelve match win streak come to an end after dropping two non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks fell to Kutztown University 3-1 and suffered a 3-0 setback to Shippensburg University.  Chowan posts a 13-5 overall record after Saturday's tri-match.

In the Hawks' first match of the day, Chowan picked up a 25-23 win in set one against Kutztown University before dropping 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19 decisions in the final three sets of the contest.

Morgan Spencer led the effort with 12 kills followed by Suraya Chase and Ashley Tutherow who tallied 11 kills apiece.  Cindy Ehrich grabbed a team-high 31 digs with Brianna Smith and Alyssa Born notching 17 and 11 digs, respectively.  Becca Page notched 14 assists while Lindsey Denne handed out 13 assists in the opening match.

Jessica Howe led all players in the contest with 17 kills in the victory followed by Audrey Stringer with 14 kills.  Madison Brake notched 20 digs while Kim Groff and Anna Conti each added 14 digs in the victory.

In the first set, with the Hawks trailing 8-7, Chowan rattled off five straight points to gain a 12-8 advantage.  The Golden Bears answered back with a 3-0 run to pull within one point, but a Kutztown error led to five more consecutive points for Chowan, resulting in a 17-11 lead for the Hawks.  Chowan held onto the advantage for the remainder of the set despite a late Kutztown rally and secured the 25-23 win over the Golden Bears using a kill by Suraya Chase

Kutztown and Chowan fought early in the second set as both teams battled to hang on to solid footing.  The Golden Bears trailed 8-7 before a kill by Niki Carpenter led to a 5-0 run for Kutztown, leaving the Hawks trailing 12-8.  Chowan was unable to overcome the deficit, falling to the Golden Bears 25-21 in set two.

Chowan jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead in the third set, but were unable to hold onto the momentum.    Down but not out, Kutztown clawed their way back from the deficit and tied the score 18-18 using a kill by Howe.  The Golden Bears kept a firm grasp on the momentum and the lead from that point forward and secured the 25-22 win on a Hawk attack error.

The Hawks trailed throughout the entire fourth set, falling to the Golden Bears 25-19, resulting in the 3-1 match win for Kutztown.

In the second match of the day, Chowan dropped a narrow 25-23 decision in the first set against Shippensburg and fell to the Raiders 25-16 and 25-13 in the third set.
Spencer led the effort again for Chowan with nine kills in the setback.  Tutherow and Chase chipped in nine and seven kills, respectively.  Ehrich grabbed a team-high 22 digs with Chase and Smith each tallying seven digs apiece.

Faith Athey paced the Raiders with 11 kills followed by Taylor Gottshall with 10 kills.  Courtney Malott accounted for 19 digs with Maura Nolan adding nine digs to aid the effort.

In the opening set, Shippensburg raced to an early 6-1 advantage and maintained the lead until the midway point when a kill by Spencer knotted the score 13-13. A service error by the Hawks returned the advantage to the Raiders but Chowan persistently chipped away at the deficit to tie the score 19-19 after a Shippensburg attack error.  Back-to-back Raider errors and a kill by Chase allowed the Hawks to pull away 22-19 but Shippensburg regrouped to orchestrate a 6-1 run resulting in a 25-23 win in set one.

Neither team managed to hold on to a lead of more than three points early in the second set.  The momentum shifted at the midway point with the score tied 9-9 as the Raiders pulled away by two points using a kill by Annie Goerl and an error by the Hawks.  Shippensburg clung to the narrow lead before pulling away 17-10 after a Chowan attack error.  The Hawks were unable to bounce back, dropping a 25-16 decision in set two.

Shippensburg jumped to a quick 8-1 lead at the start of the third set before building their advantage 20-8.  Trailing 24-10, the Hawks chipped away at the deficit, scoring three straight points, but it proved to be too little too late as Shippensburg clinched the 25-13 win using Shelby Henry's kill.

The Hawks return to the Helms Center and CIAA action on Sunday, October 25th to host Virginia Union University in Northern Division play.  Chowan will celebrate Senior Night on Sunday and will recognize Cindy Ehrich, Kelsey Schlake, and Brianna Smith prior to the contest.  First serve is slated for 6:00pm.  The contest is the final home match of the season for the Hawks.
