Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University baseball team cruised to two wins over Elizabeth City State on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks took the first game 13-5 before earning an 8-3 victory in game two. Chowan and Elizabeth City State will meet again on Sunday afternoon. First pitch has been moved to 11:00am and the games will take place at Pasquotank High School.
The Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first using
Tyler Burden's RBI double, a passed ball, and fielder's choice while stealing home twice in the frame. The Vikings responded with a run of their own in their half of the frame but the Hawks answered with one run in the second and four in the third to take a 10-1 lead.
John Hunter's homerun in the fourth along with a Viking error put the Hawks ahead 12-1. Chowan scored an additional run in the fifth using a field's choice. Elizabeth City State used an RBI single and a Hawk error to plate two in the bottom of the fifth and scored twice more in the seventh with a homerun and a fielder's choice.
Hunter and
Tanner Woods had two hits in the first game.
Bobby Mason pitched four innings for the Hawks en-route to the win and held the Vikings to five hits while striking out four.
George Mazza and
Emory Chopp both entered the game in-relief of Mason.
Elizabeth City State scored first in the second game with a ground out and RBI single. Chowan used Hunter's RBI double,
Colby Wiggins' RBI single and stole home to take a 3-2 lead in the third.
One run in the fourth and two in the fifth extended Chowan's lead to 6-2.
Blake Eure's sacrifice fly and Burden's RBI single solidified the Hawks' 8-2 advantage in the top of the seventh. The Vikings plated one run in their half of the frame before taking the 8-3 loss.
Evan Hart went the distance for the Hawks on the mound in game two. He scattered 10 hits over seven innings of work while collecting seven strikeouts. Wiggins paced the Hawks in game two with a 3-3 outing while Burden and Eure notched two hits apiece.
