CU Baseball Splits with IUP to Wrap up Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Hawks split Sunday's series against Indiana University of Pennsylvania by winning game one 7-2 and losing game two with a final score of 11-3.  Sunday's series puts Chowan at 8-9 for the season while IUP improves to 1-3.  The Crimson Hawks had a hard time scoring in the first game thanks to stellar pitching by senior right hander Ryan Bradshaw.  With today's split, Chowan took the weekend series against IUP 3-1.

Ryan Bradshaw improved to 2-1 on the season on the mound. He pitched seven complete innings and allowed nine hits and two runs.  Bradshaw managed to keep the ball low forcing IUP to ground out 13 times. IUP pitcher Craig Hibell struggled on the mound pitching four innings surrendering seven runs (four earned), six hits and four walks.  Kyle Zaorski pitched for the Crimson Hawks in relief. He tossed two innings and allowed three hits.

The CU pitching staff had a hard time keeping Robbie Zinsmeister off base.  Zinsmeister had three hits, five RBIs, five runs scored and two stolen bases.  Zinsmeister started game one off with a walk and a stolen base.  Zinsmeister scored later in the inning off of a Dylan Songer single up the middle.  Zinsmeister would score IUPs second run of the game getting a base hit in the third inning.  Zinsmeister stole second again and later scored when Troy Foster hits an RBI double to left.  Chowan batters rallied in the second inning when Justin Bagbey got one of his two hits of the game to right field.  William Ward followed Bagbey up with a single of his own to left field.  Eddie Overton sacrificed himself pushing Bagbey and Ward up a base.  Bagbey put the Hawks on the board after he scored on a wild pitch.  Ryan Moore, Blake Leebrick, and Colby Wiggins drew consecutive walks pushing Ward across the plate for the lead. Once the Hawks got the lead in the game, they never gave it up.

Chowan struck again in the fourth inning putting up three runs more to seal the win.  Wiggins and Josh Catalano reached base safely before Mack would put down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher pushing the runners to second and third.  The Hawks scored two runs when Evan Seymour  drew a walk with ball four in the dirt and kicking to the backstop.  Great base running and miscommunication allowed Catalano to score from second and Seymour to advance to second.  The attempted throw down to get Seymour allowed Wiggins to cross the plate.  Seymour advanced to third on a passed ball and later scores off a Bagbey RBI ground out running the score to 7-2 where it would stay the final three innings.  The final three innings of the game yielded three hits for both squads.

IUP had different intentions for the night cap.  The Crimson Hawks pounded out 15 hits and plated 11 runs to pick up their first win of the season.  Hawk defensive miscues didn't help junior lefty Tyler Ross with four errors.  Ross picked up his third loss of the season  after he pitched four innings, giving up five runs (three earned) off eight hits.  IUP's starter Evan Phillips picked up his first win of the season. He pitched three and a third innings allowing six hits and three runs.  IUP relievers Ben Weimer and Matt Szukics combined efforts to allow just three CU base runners over the final three and two thirds innings.

The Crimson Hawks scored first in game two and didn't look back.  Singles by Troy Foster and Aaron Lupia as well as a defensive miscue putting Mark Lupia on would push IUPs first run across.  The Crimson Hawks went on to score three more runs in the second inning with base hits by Ryan Uhl, Cory Sawka, Robbie Zinsmeister and Mark Lupia. That spread the Crimson Hawk lead to four runs.  William Ward opened the scoring up for the Hawks with a base hit up the middle.  Ward stole second followed by an Eddie Overton single to left.  Chowan cut the lead to one in the third inning with two more runs.  Brandon Mack led off the third inning off with a single to right and a stole second base.  Justin Bagbey and William Ward drew back to back walks to load the bases. Mack then scored on a wild pitch by Phillips.  Bagbey scored after an infield miscue by the Crimson Hawks.

IUP scored seven more runs over the final four innings with help from Robbie Zinsmeister. He hit his second homerun of the season and posted his fifth RBI on the day.  The Hawk bats went cold after the third inning with just two hits and two walks.  Bagbey picked up his 21st walk of the season. He drew eight walks over the weekend series.

After playing more than half of their season games at home, the Hawks will hit the road for the next two weeks. They will open CIAA play at Winston-Salem State University March 3r -4th  followed by a trip south to USC- Aiken. They will wrap up the road trip  with CIAA foe Shaw University March 10th -11th .  The Hawks will return home on March 13-14 to play Millersville University in a three game series.
