MURFREESBORO – A bases clearing double by Mercyhurst's Ryan Seigel in the top of the ninth inning propelled the Lakers to a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over Chowan on Sunday. Coming into the final inning, Chowan held a 5-3 advantage. After the first three Mercyhurst batters of the inning reached base, Ethan Santora drew a walk to bring the score to 5-4. Then Seigel crushed a double to deep right-center to give the Lakers a 7-5 lead.
Mercyhurst, ranked #18 nationally in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, improves to 3-0 on the season. Chowan falls to 3-6.
Chowan struck first in the home half of the second inning, when
Colby Wiggins drove in
Justin Bagbey with a single. Wiggins went 2-3 at the plate and scored two runs. In the fourth inning, Wiggins scored on a
Josh Catalano single to put the Hawks ahead 2-0.
The Lakers bounced back with two runs in the fifth inning, and one more in the sixth, to go up 3-2. Chowan's offense erupted, though, in the bottom of the sixth to score three runs. A
Brett Overton single scored Wiggins, and then Catalano followed with a two-RBI single. Catalano finished with a team-high three RBI.
That 5-3 Chowan lead held until the ninth inning.
Freshman
Evan Hart threw 5.1 innings, allowing three runs off six hits. He struck out two. Dan Altavilla picked up the win for Mercyhurst, throwing 3.1 innings in relief and surrendering just one hit.
Chowan will return to action on Tuesday, February 14
th, when they travel to St. Andrews Presbyterian College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
