MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University baseball team collected just five total hits in a doubleheader sweep by Mercyhurst College on Saturday. The Lakers took game one 2-0, and won the nightcap 8-1. Chowan falls to 3-5 on the season, while Mercyhurst improves to 2-0.
John DesChamps pitched well in the opener, throwing all seven innings and allowing two runs off only seven hits. He struck out three batters. Mercyhurst's Eric Aschley matched him, though, striking out eight Hawks in five innings of work. He allowed just one hit.
The Lakers got on the board in the third inning when Kolin McMillen connected for an RBI single. They added another run in the fourth inning when Ethan Santora crushed a home run over the left field fence.
Justin Bagbey and
Josh Catalano had the two hits for Chowan.
In game two, the Lakers' bats awoke, exploding for 14 hits. Chowan managed only three. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Mercyhurst put three runs on the board. They scored two more in each the fifth and sixth innings to go up 7-0.
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when
Evan Seymour drove in Catalano.
Ryan Bradshaw picked up the loss after throwing four innings, allowing three earned runs off five hits.
These two teams will play tomorrow at Hawkins field. Game time is set for 12:00 noon.
