Hawks Take Two from Vikings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University baseball team improved to 5-9 on the year after taking a home doubleheader from Elizabeth City State University this afternoon. Playing in their first CIAA games of the season, The Hawks exploded with 17 first game hits en route to a 21-5 victory. It took extra innings but Chowan took the nightcap game 3-2 after scoring on an errant throw. Chowan improves to 2-0 in the CIAA while the Vikings fall to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the league.

The Vikings exploded for four first running innings to gain an early 4-0 lead but Chowan answered with a five run first inning, capped off by a bases loaded double by Adam Capps. Chowan rolled to the 21-5 win behind the relief pitching of Brett Garrett (3-2). Garrett threw a one hitter through seven innings after coming in for starter Ryan Bradshaw. Garrett scattered five hits and one run and struck out 10 Viking batters. Brett Overton and Adam Capps collected five RBI in the win. Overton went 3-5 and Capps ended the day 2-4. Justin Bagbey had three RBI on three hits and collected his first season homerun. Josh Catalano was 3-3 with four runs scored and two RBI in the win.

It took extra innings but Chowan gained a 3-2 win over the Vikings in the nightcap. The Hawks struggled at the plate, getting just four hits and also committing four errors in the field. They held on to a 2-0 lead until the 6th inning when the Vikings scored an unearned run to pull within one. In their next at-bat they knotted the game at 2-2 forcing the extra inning play.

In the bottom of the night and two outs, Ryan Moore drew a two-out walk and moved to third when Capps lined a single to right center field. Colby Wiggins struck out swinging but took advantage of a passed ball and attempted to run to first. ECSU's catcher over threw first base and Moore scored easily for the win.

Moore came in for relief to pick up the win. John Deschamps started, pitching 6.1 innings. He gave up two hits and struck out six in the game. Moore pitched 1.2 innings striking out three and giving up a run.

Chowan will host Lincoln University (PA) on Friday in a CIAA doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm at Hawks Field.
