Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - For the second day in a row, the Chowan baseball team split a doubleheader with Indiana University-Pennsylvania. After falling 5-2 in the opening game of the twinbill, Chowan used a balanced attack of hitting and mound work to take game two with a final score of 7-3. Chowan improves to 3-9 after the weekend four game home stand with the Crimson Hawks. IUP, who opened their playing season this weekend, go away at 2-2 on the year. The Hawks will host Elizabeth City State University in a CIAA Northern Division rivalry game on Wednesday, March 2nd at Hawkins field in their next outing.
A three-run fifth inning by IUP gave them a solid lead over Chowan in the opening game. IUP's Mitch Perez and Evan Phillips combined efforts on the mound to hold the Hawks to four hits over seven innings of play.
Anthony O'Brien started the game on the mound for Chowan. He went 4.1 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out five batters.
Brett Garrett threw the final 2.2 innings. He gave up five hits and a run in 13 batters faced.
Colby Wiggins collected two of the team's four hits after going 2-2 with a run driven in.
Justin Shockley's bases loaded homerun in the bottom of the first inning gave Chowan a cushion and eventually propelled them to a 7-3 win in the nightcap. The Hawks opened the inning with three consecutive base hits to load the bases before Shockley drove the ball to deep centerfield for his first homerun of the season.
The Hawks got a solid outing from freshman
Josh Barmoy. Barmoy threw 5.1 innings, striking out eight Crimson Hawks, and scattering five hits.
Ryan Moore picked up his third save of the year after closing out the game. The Hawks pounded out 11 hits led by
Josh Catalano who was 2-2 with two runs scored.
Brandon Mack also hit well after going 2-3 with two RBI.
Justin Bagbey was 2-4 and Shockley ended the day at 1-3 with five RBI.
Chowan (3-9) will look to Wednesday for their next outing with CIAA Northern Division rival Elizabeth City State coming to town. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1:00pm at Hawkins Field.
