Hawks Wrap up CIAA Play at 15-5 to Secure Second Place

CU's Brandon Mack was 4-8 in today's DH with ECSU
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Hawks used clutch hitting in two games to come from behind to beat Elizabeth City State University on the road in a CIAA doubleheader this afternoon. The Hawks won with final game scores of 8-4 and 2-1 to improve to 22-15-1 on the year and 15-5 in the CIAA. Chowan played their final CIAA match ups of the regular season today and wrapped up a second place finish.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the 6th inning, the Hawks exploded for seven runs to take an 8-2 lead. The Vikings rallied to score two runs in their final at-bat but the damage done in the 6th was all Chowan needed to pick up the win. Tyler King picked up his second win on the mound after throwing 6.1 innings. He scattered six hits and two earned runs in the win. Anthony O'Brien threw the final two outs of the game for the save. Mike Taylor and Stewart Barnette were both 2-3 at the plate while Brandon Mack and Adam Capps each went 2-4. Nate Mitchell belted his 11th homerun of the year and accounted for two RBI in the game.

Chowan found themselves behind again in game two of the twinbill but rallied to score two runs in their final at-bat to take the 2-1 win. With one out Barnette singled to right field and then scored on a two-out double by Mack two batters later. After Mitchell walked, Taylor singled through the middle to score Mack from second base and get the cushion they needed to hold on to the win.

Lee Dickens started the game, throwing 3.0 innings. He gave up a run on one hit while he was on the mound. Four relief pitchers combined efforts to hold the Vikings hitless for the remainder of the game. Chowan got the lead with John Morris still on the mound. He threw the 6th inning and struck out one. John Atkins retired the side in the bottom of the 7th to get the save.

Mack was the only Hawk to get multiple hits in game two after going 2-4 with a double. Taylor was 1-3 with an RBI.

Chowan will prepare this week for the CIAA Spring Championships in Petersburg, Virginia. They are set to start on Thursday at the Petersburg Sports Complex. For more information on the brackets, check the CU athletics website early this week.
