Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team moved to 19-19 after sweeping a doubleheader with Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks swept the four-game series over the weekend to improve their CIAA record to 10-3. Lincoln fell to 5-24 overall and 1-11 in the CIAA after Sunday's doubleheader. Chowan won game one 24-4 and game two 18-6.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the game after posting 23 runs off of 21 hits in their four at-bats. The offense gave starting pitcher
Emory Chopp the insurance he needed for his first win of the season. Chopp scattered six hits over four innings of work.
The Hawks offense was plentiful in the 24-4 first game win. The Hawks pounded out 21 total hits with seven batters garnering multiple hits games.
Marquise Lanier went 4-4 with a homerun and five runs batted in.
Trent Brosdahl ended game one 3-3 with a double and four runs scored. Zach Cooper and
Harry Markotay each went 3-4 with five runs batted in.
Julian Lopez and
Kyle Cross added two hits each in the win. Marvin Harrell collected two hits and a solo homerun.
Corey Fago pitched two innings in relief of Chopp.
Aaron Akers tossed the last inning of the first game.
Matt Kaplan got the nod on the mound to start game two. After a shutting down the Lions in their first at-bat, they put up three runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead over the Hawks.
Chowan trailed the Lions 3-0 until the bottom of the third inning of game two. The Hawks posted three runs to knot the game at 3-3.
Aaron Flanagan posted a go ahead run on a double steal in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With a 4-3 lead, Kaplan returned to the mound. He got some help from Flanagan again. He drove in a run in the bottom of the 5
th inning on a double up the middle to add to the Hawks lead at 5-3.
Lincoln pressed the Hawks in the top of the 6
th inning, forcing a pitching change.
Jake Moore came in for Kaplan but was replaced by
Vinny Puma after two batters. Puma got the Hawks out of the 6
th inning.
Kyle Cross cleared the bases with a single to through the right side to give Chowan a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the 6
th inning. The Hawks went on to plate 12 more runs to take an 18-6 lead into the top of the 7
th inning.
Puma held on the for the win in relief for his second win of the season. Flanagan ended game two 4-4 at the plate with five RBI and a homerun. Harrell collected two hits and Lopez ended game two 3-4.
The Hawks will travel to Barton College on Tuesday, April 11
th in their next outing. Game time is slated for 2:00pm in Wilson, North Carolina.
