Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team moved to 9-17 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA after dropping a doubleheader with Winston-Salem State University on Sunday afternoon. Both teams opened CIAA play with this weekend's games. Saturday's doubleheader was postponed due to foul weather. A make-up date for Saturday's games have not been determined. The Rams improved to 12-11 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Game One
After a two scoreless innings the Rams got on the board first in the game in the top of the third inning. They took advantage of two errors and a wild pitch by Chowan to post three runs for the 3-0 lead. They posted another unearned run in the top of the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
WSSU's Kanoa Hironaka pitched three innings of shutout ball before the Hawks answered in the bottom of the 4
th inning. Marquis Lanier scored on wild pitch to get the Hawks on the board. Lanier reached base on an infield single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Rams catcher.
Chowan posted two runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning to cut the Ram lead to 6-3. WSSU's Landon Steiner posted a solo homerun in the top of the 7
th to spread the Ram lead to 7-3.
Lipscomb started the game on the mound and picked up his 4
th loss of the season. He gave up four hits and four runs, none of which were earned, in four innings of work.
Corey Fago replaced Lipscomb in the top of the 5
th inning. Fago pitched two innings in relief and faced six batters. He gave up two runs off of two hits.
Daniel Whitener pitched the final inning of the first game, giving up a run off of one hit in five batters faced.
Lanier and
Kyle Cross collected two hits each. For WSSU, Hironaka picked up the win. He tossed a complete game, holding the Hawks to eight hits. Brandon Ford went 3-3 with two runs scored and John Garcia ended game one 2-3.
Game Two
The Rams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after collecting two runs in their first at-bat. CU's
Matt Kaplan started for the Hawks. After giving up two runs in the first inning, he settled in to keep the Rams off the board for their next four at-bats. The Rams plated a single run in the top of the 6
th inning to take a 3-0 lead. Middle reliever
Vinny Puma came in to get the Hawks out of 6
th inning.
The Hawks struggled to get their offense started in the game. WSSU's Seth Reeves kept the Hawks off of the board through seven innings of play. Reeves held Chowan to three hits in the contest.
Chowan will travel to Virginia State University March 25
th-March 26
th in their next outing. Game times for both days are at 1:00pm in Ettrick, Virginia.
