Chowan Baseball Suffers Season Opening Losses to Coker College

CU's Marquis Lanier went 4-7 in DH with Coker
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC-The Chowan University baseball team dropped their home season openers to Coker College on Saturday afternoon with final scores 5-4 and 11-1. Coker improved to 3-0 on the young season with the wins while Chowan starts the 2017 campaign with a 0-2 record.

In the opening game the Hawks recorded ten hits. The Cobras tallied six hits to earn the victory led by Thomas Lopez with two hits.

Marquise Lanier went 3-4 with an run batted in and a run scored for the Hawks in game one while Julian Lopez and Connor Arcobasso each added one hit for Chowan. Aaron Flanagan drove in two runs on a double in a 1-3 plate performance. Bailey Lipscomb was credited with the loss in game one. He threw 4.0 innings, surrendering four hits and three earned runs. Vinny Puma entered the contest in relief, tossing three innings. Puma finished the game with two strikeouts, two hits, and two earned runs after facing 14 Cobra batters.

Darius Coldiron picked up the win on the mound for Coker after recording six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

The Cobras got on the board first in the contest in the 2nd inning . Chowan answered in the bottom of the frame when Marvin Harrell drove in Trent Brosdahl on a line drive to right field that tied the score 1-1.

In the top of the third inning Lopez recorded a two run home run pushing the Cobras ahead 3-1.Chowan regrouped in the sixth inning scoring two runs off three hits. Flanagan drilled a two out double to center field to score Robert Williams and Lanier.  Connor Arcobasso singled to the right side to keep the inning alive in the ensuing at-bat. However the sixth inning rally felt short when Julian Lopez lined out to short stop to end the inning. Chowan failed to get on the board in the 7th to cut their late inning rally short and get the eventual 5-4 loss.

Will Edwards got the nod on the mound in the night cap game. Coker exploded for five runs to open the first inning frame. Coker's Will Sutton and his defense kept the Hawks off the board until the 7th inning. He had a no hitter going through four complete innings. Lanier busted up the no hitter with a line drive single to left field but was thrown out trying to leg out a double.

Chowan tallied just two hits in game two. Besides Lanier's single, Zack Cooper accounted for a left field double in the bottom of the 7th. He later scored on an infield grounder by Lanier to get the Hawks on the board. Chowan got the eventual 11-1 loss.

Coker belted out nine hits in game two with Brooks Estrada going 2-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Sutton picked up the win after throwing 6.0 innings, striking out four and scattering two hits.

Edwards picked up the loss for Chowan on the mound. He threw 2.0 innings, giving up four hits and four earned runs. Daniel Whitener and Corey Fago each pitched two innings in relief of Edwards.

The Hawks will continue the four-game series with Coker on Sunday, February 5th. The first game is set for 12:00pm.
