Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team improved to 6-8 on the year after a doubleheader split with Lock Haven University on Sunday afternoon. Chowan dropped the first game of the doubleheader 10-9 but fought back to take the second game 14-8. Lock Haven fell to 2-2 on the year.
Lock Haven University got on top early in the game after a five-run first inning, highlighted by a Matt Lahn three-run homer and a pair of run scoring doubles. Chowan answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own.
Zack Cooper drove in a run with a double down the right field line.
Trent Brosdahl plated a run with an infield out to cut into the Eagle lead at 5-2.
Lock Haven's Kolby Dehaas accounted for two more Eagle runs in the top of the 2
nd inning with a two-run blast over the right field fence.
Jake Moore started the game for Chowan on the mound. He gave up seven runs in two innings of work before being replaced by
Matt Kaplan in the top of the 3
rd inning.
Chowan added a run in the bottom of the 4
th inning when
Jack Downum singled to score
Harry Markotay from second base. Lock Haven's Zach Manuppelli pitched out of the inning to hold the game at 7-3 through four complete. LHU's Evan McFarland led the 5
th inning off with a solo homerun to left field to add another run the Eagle lead. Chowan answered at the bottom of the frame. Cooper drove in
Marquise Lanier with his second RBI double of the game. Brosdahl plated a run with a sacrifice fly to cut into the Eagle lead 8-5.
The Eagles spread their lead to 10-5 in the top of the 6
th inning with another two runs.
Emory Chopp came in to replace Kaplan with one out and a runner at first base. He pitched out of the inning to get the Hawks to the bottom of the frame.
Chowan cut into the Eagle lead at 10-9 with four runs of their own in the bottom of the 6
th inning.
Connor Arcobasso plated a run with a double to right field. The Hawks capitalized on an infield throwing error to plate two more runs and an infield out to get another, cutting the Eagle lead to one run heading into the last inning of the game.
LHU's Brett Morrison was able to effectively pitch out of the bottom of the 7
th inning to grab the 10-9 win for his squad.
CU's Moore picked up the loss after throwing 2.0 innings, giving up seven runs off seven hits. Chowan collected 10 hits in the first game with Cooper and Arcobasso each going 2-4. Brosdahl ended the first game with two RBI.
For LHU, Nick Stotler led his team with a 3-4 plate performance. Lahn drove in four runs.
Will Edwards got the nod for CU in game two of the doubleheader.
Lock Haven opened game two with two runs in their first at-bat, highlighted by a Stotler homerun to left field. Chowan knotted the game at 2-2 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a throwing error by the Eagles.
After a scoreless second inning, Lock Haven posted five runs in the 3
rd inning to take a 7-2 lead. Marvin Harrell led the bottom of the 3
rd inning off with a triple to left field and scored on an Arcobasso singled in the next at-bat. Lanier followed that single up with a single of his own to centerfield, setting up Cooper with runners at first and second with no outs. Cooper came up big, drilling a three-run homer to right center field to cut the Eagle lead to 7-6 through three innings of play.
Daniel Whitener, pitching in relief of Edwards, retired the side in the top of the 4
th inning, setting up the Hawks offense.
Harry Markotay led the inning off with a single to left field, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on an Arcobasso single to knot the game at 7-7.
LHU plated a run in the top of the 5
th inning to take a narrow 8-7 lead but the cardiac kids never give up, putting the pressure on the Eagles in their next at bat. With the bases loaded and one out, Chowan plated seven runs to take a 14-8 lead heading into the 6
th inning.
Corey Fago came in to pitch in the fifth inning for Chowan, pitching out of a bases loaded jam to set up Chowan for their seven run 5
th inning at bat.
Fago pitched the win in game two after throwing 2.1 innings in relief.
Offensively for Chowan, Arcobasso ended game two 3-4 with three runs batted in. Cooper had a 2-3 plate performance with three RBI and three runs scored. Harrell ended game two going 2-3 with two runs scored.
Chowan will hit the field again on Saturday and Sunday, March 4
th-5
th when East Strousburg University comes to Murfreesboro for a four-game series.
