Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Chowan University baseball team suffered a 13-4 setback to the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks move to 26-24 on the season with the loss while the Trojans advance to 31-19 with the victory.
An RBI single by David Mayo in the first and a wild pitch in the fourth gave Mount Olive a quick 2-0 lead. The Hawks knotted the score in the seventh behind
Aaron Akers' fielder's choice and a wild pitch. In the home half of the frame, the Trojans answered with two runs off of Zak Orrison's triple and a sacrifice fly by Jack Sherrill.
The Hawks responded with one run in the eighth after
Aaron Flanagan led off the inning with a homerun. Mount Olive exploded for nine runs off of eight hits in the eighth to take a commanding 13-3 lead. Chowan mustered one run in their final at-bat using
Will Gurganus' RBI groundout but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
The Hawks collected 11 hits over the course of the competition led by Flanagan with three hits and one RBI. Akers,
Zach Cooper,
Marvin Harrell Jr., and
Josh Martin each recorded two hits apiece in the setback.
Mount Olive tallied 15 hits in the contest with Orrison and Brandon Day each notching three hits in the win.
Chowan used seven pitchers during the nine-inning affair.
Scott Edge was credited with the loss after surrendering two runs (two earned) off of three hits in one inning of work.
Matt Kaplan started the game on the mound and was relieved by
Bobby Mason,
Cody Smith, Edge,
Will Edwards,
Carter Siweck, and
Troy Bettinger.
Five Mount Olive pitchers saw action on Wednesday with Brighton Hudson recording the win. He threw 1.2 innings in the contest, allowing three runs (three earned) off of four hits.
The Hawks await word of the location and seeding for the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament. The NCAA Division II Baseball Selection Show is set to air Sunday at 10pm.
