Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team completed the sweep of Lincoln University (PA) on Saturday afternoon with two wins over the Lions. The Hawks improve to 17-20 overall and 11-4 in league play with the victories while the Lions slide to 5-22 overall and 1-7 against CIAA competition. Chowan picked up a 19-0 win in the opening game before topping Lincoln (PA) 17-0 in the nightcap.
The series, originally scheduled to take place in Oxford, Pennsylvania, was moved to Chowan's campus to due inclement weather up North. The Hawks served as the visiting team for the series against the Lions.
Chowan plated 10 runs in their first at-bat in the opening game using
Aaron Flanagan's RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, a two-run single by
Emory Chopp,
Jack Downum's two-run double,
Will Gurganus' two-run single, and
Connor Arcobasso's two-run blast. The Hawks added five additional runs in the top of the second using Downum's sacrifice fly, an RBI double by Arcobasso, Flanagan's two-run double to left, and
Zach Cooper's RBI single.
Chowan extended their lead to 18-0 in the fourth after Gurganus' RBI single and Wade Wyatt's two-run double. Downum's solo homerun in the fifth pushed the Hawks ahead 19-0. Lincoln (PA) was unable to respond offensively, mustering just five hits in the setback.
Ronald Lashley led the effort for the Lions with two hits in game one. DeVante Parker took the loss on the mound. He allowed 15 runs (14 earned) off of 14 hits in 1.2 innings of work. Yaser Ortiz entered the game in-relief and allowed four runs (four earned) off of five hits over the course of 5.1 innings.
Bobby Mason earned the win on the mound. He held the Lions to four hits in five scoreless innings of work while recording five strikeouts. Flanagan recorded four hits while knocking in three RBI with Arcobasso, Cooper, and Downum each tallied three hits in the win. Gurganus knocked in four RBI for the Chowan Blue and White.
In game two, the Hawks plated three runs in the top of the first after RBI singles by Cooper and Martin along with Wyatt Jr.'s RBI double. An RBI single by Cooper, Martin's triple to right,
Emory Chopp's RBI single, and a wild pitch gave the Hawks four additional runs in the third and left the Lions trailing 7-0.
Flanagan led off the fourth with a solo homerun to left center to push the Hawks ahead 8-0. Chowan plated four runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to take the commanding 17-0 win.
Flanagan tallied four hit in the win with Gurganus and Martin recorded three hits for Chowan.
Matt Kaplan picked up the victory on the mound. He scattered three hits over the course of seven innings while striking out seven.
Joshua Roberson tallied two hits for Lincoln. Lashley took the loss after allowing 10 runs (eight runs) on 11 hits. Marcos Castillo entered the game in-relief and surrendered seven runs (six earned) off of nine hits in two innings of work.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday as Chowan hosts Virginia State University in a make-up game. First pitch is slated for 2:30pm.
