Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team won a pair of games against Lincoln University (PA) in the opening day of the CIAA series. The Hawks improve to 15-20 with the wins and advance to 9-4 in league play. The Lions slide to 5-20 overall and 1-5 in CIAA play after the setbacks. Chowan won game one 27-7 and took a 12-4 victory in the nightcap. The Hawks' win over the Lions in the opening game marked the 100

The Chowan-Lincoln (PA) series, originally scheduled to take place in Oxford, Pennsylvania, was moved to Chowan due to inclement weekend weather up North. The Hawks serve as the visiting team for the series.
Chowan plated two runs in their first at-bat behind
Zach Cooper's two-run homerun. An RBI single by Edwin Rivera, Ronnie Oldham's one-run double, a groundout, wild pitch, and an RBI single by Julian Bradshaw led to five runs for the Lions in their half of the frame. The Hawks scored 11 runs off of 10 hits in the top of the second, highlighted by
Jack Downum's three-run homerun.
Josh Martin's double in the third gave the Hawks an additional run and extended Chowan's lead to 14-5.
Will Gurganus' double in the fifth along with
Emory Chopp's RBI single in the sixth pushed the Hawks ahead 16-5. Chowan exploded for 11 runs in the seventh behind six hits and three Lincoln errors. Trailing 27-5, the Lions plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh using a fielder's choice and RBI single by Bradshaw before falling to the Hawks 27-7.
The Hawks recorded 26 hits in the victory led by Cooper with six hits and four RBI. Martin added five hits and four RBI with
Connor Arcobasso tallying four hits and three RBI. Downum and Gurganus each accounted for five RBIs in the win.
Scott Edge picked up the win on the mound. He threw 6.2 innings in the victory and held the Lions to seven runs (seven earned) while surrendering 14 hits.
Bradshaw, DeVante Parker, and Rivera each tallied three hits for Lincoln (PA) in game one. Marcos Castillo took the loss for the Lions for Lincoln (PA) on the mound. He allowed 12 runs (12 earned) off of 10 hits. Brendan Sherman-Johnson, Luis Nieves, and Crae Watkins each entered the contest in-relief.
The Lions struck first in the nightcap, taking advantage of a wild pitch and a Hawk error to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Chowan responded with four runs in the fourth and tacked on two runs in the fifth using Downum's RBI double to pull away 6-2. Martin's two-run homerun, a two-run blast by Downum, a stolen base and Cooper's RBI single led to six additional runs in the seventh for Chowan. Lincoln (PA) mustered two runs in their half of the frame off a bunt single and RBI single by Dumarius Gooch before falling to the Hawks 12-4.
Chowan totaled 14 hits in the win with
Wade Wyatt Jr. and Martin each tallying three hits. Martin recorded three RBI with Downum knocking in four runs in the win. Ronald Lashley and Joshua Roberson each had three hits for the Lions.
Cody Smith picked up the victory on the mound for Chowan. He tossed five innings in the win while holding the Lions to two runs (one earned) off of six hits while striking out nine batters.
Tre Harper threw two innings in-relief. He allowed two runs (one earned). Orlando Roberson took the loss for Lincoln (PA) on the mound. He surrendered 11 runs (nine earned) off of 11 hits over six innings of work.
The Hawks and Lions take the field again on Saturday to complete the series. First pitch is slated for 1pm on Hawkins Field.
