Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University baseball team dropped a nonconference twinbill against Barton College on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks move to 13-20 on the season with the losses while the Bulldogs improve to 25-12 with the victories. Chowan fell to Barton 4-3 in ten innings in game one before dropping a 9-0 decision to the Bulldogs in the nightcap.
The Hawks struck first in the contest, plating two runs in the bottom of the second using an RBI single by
Jack Downum and
Aaron Akers' sacrifice bunt. The Bulldogs answered in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs behind a pair of RBI singles by Hunter Pearre and Jacob Willis along with Gatlin Pate's groundout.
With Barton holding a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Downum led off the frame with a double to center and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 3-3. After two scoreless innings of play, a Hawk error led to a run for Barton in the top of tenth, giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 edge. Chowan was unable to answer back offensively in their half of the frame.
Downum paced the Hawks with two hits in the loss while
Emory Chopp,
Zach Cooper,
Aaron Flanagan,
Will Gurganus, and
Marvin Harrell Jr., each recorded one hit for Chowan.
Calvin Hawke, Hunter Pearre, Charlie Vaughn, and Jacob Willis each recorded two hits in the win for Barton.
Bailey Lipscomb was credited with the loss after entering the contest in-relief. He allowed one run (unearned) in 4.1 innings of work off of one hit.
Will Edwards started the game on the mound and surrendered three runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Ricky Jernigan picked up the win for Barton while Blake Helms was credited with the save.
In the nightcap, Pearre's single up the middle gave Barton a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bulldogs added one run in the second using Ben Youngblood's sacrifice fly. Holding a 2-0 advantage, Youngblood's RBI double and Charlie Vaughan's single up the middle pushed the Bulldogs ahead 4-0 in the top of the fourth.
Chris Davis' two-run single and a Hawk error led to three additional runs for Barton in the sixth. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 9-0 in the top of the seventh behind RBI singles by Vaughan and Hawke en-route to earning the win.
Carter Siweck took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs (four earned) off of nine hits in four innings of work.
Troy Bettinger and
Jack Downum both entered the contest in-relief.
Jordan Ramos picked up with win for Barton. He held Chowan to one hit in five innings of work. Benjamin Brann and Josh Mims both threw one inning apiece in-relief.
Chowan totaled three hits in game two led by Chopp with two knocks. Cooper recorded one hit in the setback. Barton collected 16 hits in the win led by Vaughan with four hits and two RBI.
The Hawks look to recover on Saturday on Sunday. Chowan returns to CIAA play for a four-game series against Lincoln University (PA). First pitch is slated for 1:00pm on both days.
