Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University baseball team concluded the CIAA series against Saint Augustine's University in thrilling fashion on Monday afternoon. A single to left by
Wade Wyatt Jr. in Chowan's final at-bat secured the 15-14 win for the Hawks. Chowan improves to 13-18 on the season and 7-4 in the CIAA with the win while the Falcons drop to 9-26 overall and 4-4 in league play after Monday's setback. The Hawks swept the Falcons 3-1 in the CIAA series.
RBI singles by Will Thomas and Ricardo Martin gave the Falcons a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Carey Cheek's sacrifice fly pushed Saint Augustine's ahead 3-0 in the second. The Hawks responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame using
Will Gurganus' two-run single and
Zach Cooper's two-run double.
In the top of the third, Saint Augustine's plated seven runs behind Hector Pichardo's RBI single, a Hawk error, two-run triple by Tyquan Bryant, and Cheek's three-run homerun. Chowan's
Josh Martin homered in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-5.
The Hawks tacked on four runs in the fourth after a bases-loaded walk, Falcon error, and two-run double by Wyatt Jr. to pull within striking distance. Cooper's RBI single in the fifth knotted the score 10-10.
Jack Downum's two-run single and a Falcon error in the sixth pushed the Hawks ahead 13-10. Down but not out, the Falcons strung together four runs in the seventh using Martin's triple, RBI singles from Pichardo and Cameron Lopez, and a bases-loaded walk.
Trailing 14-13 in Chowan's final at-bat, Cooper reached on an error to open the frame and promptly scored on
Marvin Harrell Jr.'s single up the middle to tie the game. With Harrell Jr. on second and Flanagan on first, Wyatt Jr. answered the call for the Chowan Blue and White, lacing a single to left to give the Hawks all they would need to secure the 15-14 victory.
The Falcons tallied 19 hits in the loss led by Martin and Pichardo with three hits apiece. Cheek recorded five RBI for the Falcons in the setback. The Hawks pounded out 14 hits in the win with Wyatt Jr. accounting for four hits and three RBI. Cooper, Downum,
Will Gurganus, and Martin each had two hits with Cooper and Wyatt Jr. notching two RBIs apiece.
Timothy Carter took the loss for Saint Augustine's. He surrendered 15 runs (seven earned) off of 14 hits while striking out five batters.
Matt Kaplan started the contest for the Hawks. He allowed 10 runs (nine earned) off of 11 hits in two innings of work.
Austin McGhee entered the contest in-relief and surrendered four runs (four earned) off of eight hit in 4.2 innings.
Bailey Lipscomb was credited with the victory after entering the contest in the seventh inning.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday as Chowan plays host to Barton College. First pitch for the non-conference doubleheader is slated for 1:00pm.
